Microplastics have shown up everywhere researchers look, including in the water we drink. Bottled water has drawn particular attention. Here is an honest look at what the science shows, what is still uncertain, and what you can practically do about it.
How much plastic is in bottled water?
More than people expect. A 2024 study highlighted by the NIH found that a liter of bottled water contained on average around 240,000 tiny plastic particles, most of them nanoplastics far smaller than earlier methods could detect. Much of it appears to come from the bottle and cap themselves, and relying on bottled water can raise microplastic intake substantially compared with filtered tap.
What are the health effects?
This is where honesty matters: scientists are still working it out. Laboratory research suggests very small plastic particles can enter cells and may carry other chemicals along with them, and the World Health Organization has reviewed microplastics in drinking water and called for more research. But the WHO has also said that, based on current evidence, the risk from microplastics in drinking water appears low, while acknowledging the data is limited. In short, it is a reasonable concern, not an established emergency.
Simple ways to reduce your exposure
You do not need to panic to be sensible. Favor tap water where it is safe, since treatment removes many particles, and store it in glass or stainless steel rather than plastic. Avoid drinking from plastic bottles that have been heated in a hot car or left in the sun, and consider a quality water filter. These are low-cost habits that cut exposure without much effort.

Bottled water can contain surprisingly high numbers of plastic particles, and while the long-term health effects are still being studied, cutting back is easy and low-risk. Filtered tap water in a glass or steel bottle is a simple way to drink less plastic while the science catches up.
